The Anatomy of Anxiety
by: Jinyu

Just a little ditty I wrote on the prompt: "screech"

Screech, the door opened at an agonizing rate. Louise was not expecting anyone to be in the house. As far as she knew, her roomates had gone to St. Louis for the weekend, leaving her the house all to herself. She got up and crept slowly towards it to investigate. She imagined a shadow lingering on the floor, her steps bringing her closer and closer to the ominous figure that resided there. It could be a robber. If she surprised him now, he might panic. His gun would discharge, her blood sprayed all over the newly finished carpet... She stopped.

It probably wasn't a robber. She sat back down in her chair, but... Screeeeech! The door continued to open. She looked down at the keyboardand then back at the door. What if it was an ax murderer. What if he had been going from house to house, raping and killing women like her. She was going to die, right here, right now, and she hadn't even had a chance to graduate from college! Would she rather, she thought, the panic building in her chest, to sit here and wait for her end? To have him come up behind her and ax her there, or should she go to the door.

She swallowed her anxiety and got back out of her seat. She moved across the floor, slowly but surely. She came up to the door. Her heart pounding as she placed her hand on the knocker. She took a deep breath and... FLUNG IT OPEN!

"Maow!" the cat said slipping past her into the room.
"YOU AREN'T ALLOWED IN HERE!" she snapped, but couldn't help but laugh.
It was just the cat.
