Why umbrellas look so sad
Monday. 11.26.07 11:29 pm
I was reading Zanzi's Blog and I was thinking about umbrellas. It didn't have a lot to do with socialism, so I decided that I ought to write a seperate blog about them. You see, I always think that umbrellas are so sad. The sit, slender and black in their umbrella holder, a thing that few people have because they are generally deleterious to your health. Some people buy bright ones, big ones, colorful ones, but mostly the one that you grab on your way to work... that one is black.

Then you walk along, the solemnic walk necessary to make an umbrella useful. If you walk too fast, you'll splash or you'll dodge the rain entirely, a sheet of sideways rain coming into your face. You hold it tight to you and like a terrified terrier, it clings to you, threatening to blow out the other way in the wind. The you shoulder your way into the building, shake it out on the entry way before holstering it and cursing yourself for choosing such a large one. You used it as a cane, it's regular click sounding like the ticking of a clock, following until the next time it rains.

I suppose that's why I think umbrellas are so sad. It's because, whenever you carry one, it's because you're expecting rain.
